Booth, Billington
(1857–1940)
   Order Founder and Philanthropist.
   Booth was the second son of William and Catherine booth. In 1883, he became joint Commander of the Salvation Army in Australia and in 1887 he moved to the United States of America. However, he found the Army too centralised and authoritarian and in 1896 he left to found the Volunteers of America. This is an evangelical welfare organisation; Protestant, though non-denominational in orientation, it operates numerous philanthropic institutions in the United States.
